Military reform: 'Bierset to close, Koksijde to remain open'
According to Defence Minister Pieter De Crem (CD&V), the air force base at Bierset near Liège is set to close, with the 28 Augusta helicopters being moved to the base at Bevekom. The closure of Bierset forms part of a new series of reforms introduced by De Crem to clear his budget. A number of barracks will also be closed in the process. The air force base at Koksijde will remain open to accommodate the new NH90 helicopters. The medical component of the military will also be reorganised, with the units at Destelbergen and Nijvel being closed and moved to Neder-Over-Heembreek, home of the famous burns centre.
De Crem is aware of the fact that the military are tired by reforms, which have been going on since the fall of the Berlin wall twenty years ago. He hopes this would be the last and promises that no forced dismissals will be introduced.
